New Spread in Standard Magazine

September might not be so bad after all. A bunch of work I did over the summer is making its way into the public starting with a spread I shot for Kelly LaPlante's new online magazine (with a focus on green): Standard Magazine. I got to shoot this incredible home in the hollywood hills that married indoors with out. It was for a piece called "The Modern Man's Guide To Hillside Living' and it starts on page 66.

Dwell Home Tour: Judy Kameon

Although I was mainly tied to the convention center for all of Dwell on Design, I did make it to one of the homes on the home tours: that of Judy Kameon. I've been a huge fan of Judy's since I saw her speak on a panel at Dwell on Design three years ago. She owns landscape architecture firm Elysian Landscapes (they designed the garden at the Parker Hotel in Palm Springs!)and has a line of mid century inspired outdoor furniture called Plain Air. I think she's hugely talented and, at the same time, completely down to earth. So I couldn't miss seeing her home.




Modern with definite mid century influences, Judy's use of color is stunning. With a background in painting and some help from this guy, Judy and her husband have woven in color, texture and personality into their home. And even though there is color everywhere you look, the overall feeling in the house is one of lightness and space and warmth. The inside is seamless with the outside and the garden abounds with nooks and private spaces that make it feel much larger than it is.










The kitchen is particularly stunning with its aqua colored heath tiles and orange-red cabinet fronts. Judy's husband built all the cabinets himself. The cork tiles throughout make the space feel open and warm. I also love how the downstairs is one big space that spills out into the garden--great for entertaining.

Room and Board Culver City

I think I forgot to ever post these pictures of the new Room and Board in Culver City. Great showroom, beautiful furniture, way out of my price range.

Opening of Plain Air Outdoor Furniture

Yesterday I stopped by the opening of Plain Air, the new outdoor furniture line designed by Judy Kameon (landscape designer extraordinaire). The showroom looked great and in addition to the mid century inspired daybeds, tables and chairs they carry some Bauer Pottery and other vintage garden pots and great pillows and fabrics. One of the things I love about Judy and her crew is how down to earth they are. Had a great time and it was all a nice break from thinking about my kitty. I also had a chance to meet the Germinatrix herself, Ivette Soler. More on that soon.

CB2 Los Angeles is Now Open

Well, I for one have been waiting for this moment for a long time. CB2's LA location is finally open in the old Virgin Megastore building at Sunset and Laurel. Stopped by yesterday for the press preview and it did not disappoint. I got to meet some of the buyers and the brand directors. Did you know that they don't advertise? That they rely solely on word of mouth. Also, did you know that they totally revised products if they get bad feedback from customers? Like, they actually listen?





I've been a fan for a long time but only ever got to visit a store last year in New York during ICFF. Now I plan to stock up on simple glasses, some bright shiny colored lamps, and one day those marble side tables. You can see the rest of my pictures from yesterday right here.

I love Vietnamese Food and Foot Massages

Over the weekend I had a chance to make it out to Alhambra for some really yummy vietnamese food (and iced coffee) and an hour long foot massage (for $20). Now if I could find a way to do that everyday, I'd be all set.

Golden hour and I heart LA

I worked downtown today and on my way home driving across the historic 6th street bridge was the most brilliant golden movie lighting. Everything in the sun's path was a bright warm light and everything else was a pink purple haze. It was the kind of light that makes me fall in love with Los Angeles, makes me nostalgic for summer camp in oak grove park and makes me feel happy to be just where I am.

Lark Cupcakes

Finally checked out Lark in Silverlake. Do these images do the chocolate and the coconut cupcakes justice? Never even got to photograph the cream puff, it disappeared too quickly. Went with Jamie, Jordan and Vivian.

And if the cupcakes didn't knock my socks off, then this doilyscape did. Turns out I'd already seen it on flickr and blogged it for AT, but it was magical in person. That's Jordan, he and Jamie and I went to high school together. Jordan has a band in LA and I can't get enough of the first 2 songs on their site.
